volt meter wiring

Hey guys. I'm restoring my first golf cart. I bought a volt meter that only has two prongs. I would still like it to cut on and off with ignition. I'm seeing a lot of different diagrams but confused on one issue. I installed a new 48v to 12v reducer and running all the lights, etc through it. On the diagrams it shows the volt. meter connects to the last battery. I'm confused how this won't damage the meter because it does have a back light and power. Some wiring show to go through the ignition system as the load switch. I don't know if I just need to buy a three prong if I want it to not be on all the time. I want to make sure I don't mess something up by bypassing the volt. reducer. Any help with diagrams would be great. Thanks.
